Another Great Day Ahead

To start the day with a great thought about Our Creator's love, I would like to share this ASL interpretation of such an emotional song that speaks of His Love for us and how amazing He is above everything and everyone else. Have a great day everyone!

PS. I wish I can become very skilled at signing and be able to interpret a song like this (with or without the audience)

Sign Language Level 3: Here I Come!

It's that time of the year again! In a week or so, I will be busy during Sundays as I learn more about sign language and how to communicate with the Hearing Impaired using it. I would have to wake up earlier even on a weekend. It means not staying up too late on Saturday evenings, not being able to watch as much movies or TV shows, not being able to meet with friends for consecutive Saturday nights. However, it's definitely going to be worth it as I get to know more ways to sign and express myself nonverbally and more importantly, be able to understand more those who are unable to communicate using the spoken word.

Aja!

It's Fun To Sign

I've been trying to learn sign language for almost a year now and am working on my second level certificate. At first, it was nothing more than mere curiosity and adding up something to my special education degree. Eventually though, it has unfolded a whole new world for me. Although I still have a long way to go, what with my memory not being as sharp as it used to be, there are still some simple words that I forget especially when I am absent from my once-a-week class. So now, I take the effort to wake up early even on a Sunday just to avoid missing out on a lot of words. It is also great that I am able to understand HI people when I randomly see them around signing. Probably the only unfortunate thing is that I do not have an HI friend whom I can practice this new set of skills with. However, it is really a great feeling for me to be able to grasp a bit about what they have to say.

Another thing about learning sign language is how cool it is to sign a song. Watch this for a sample (not from me though, but this can be a great inspiration to probably make my own on youtube..in about 50 years LOL)

Finger Talk

Let your fingers do the talking!

This is not about the middle finger or the likes. It is all about being able to effectively communicate with those who cannot speak by understanding sign language and learning how to make use of it as well. Sign language has been around for quite some time. At the present, there are variations developed to capture the locality's dialect. However, American Sign Language and Filipino Sign Language do not have a lot of differences between each other.

It is an interesting field to get into. Although I have not been able to fully communicate with people who have hearing disabilities and are completely communicating through sign language, I get to grasp a certain amount of information from what they say using their hands. It is interesting and exciting to be able to understand what they have to say and how they say it. Personally, I am looking forward to learning more signs and gaining a greater amount of understanding about these individuals' world.

For those who wish to learn sign language, a Sunday class is available at Basak Elementary School, Basak, Cebu City.
